Pro Angler Profile - Justin van der Walt

Born 1983 in Cape Town, South Africa. Captain Justin van der Walt developed his passion for the outdoors and fishing through constant exposure to these activities by his farther. At the age of 16 he lost most of the use of his right arm in a motorcycle accident but was determined not to let this stand in the way of living life to its fullest.

In 2016 he started Fish Tales Charters, born from a love of fishing and a passion to share ocean bound experiences with others. Captain Justin achieved his SADSAA (South African Deep sea Angling Association) skipper colours in 2017 and has received numerous recognitions in local fishing competitions as an angler and Captain alike.

Fish Tales Charters now has two boats operating in Cape Town with great plans for the future.

CASE STUDY

I have not looked back once since I first installed Raymarine products on Fish Tales. They have become an extension of my Captaining abilities, giving me the edge needed to excel in a sport where the competition is fierce.

Areas that I fish can be more than a 1000m deep but we only target fish in the first 100m. This does in no manner mean that I do not need to know what is going on with the bottom structure. Structures create updwellings of nutrient rich waters, attracting bait fish, which in turn attracts the pelagic Yellowfin Tuna that I target. Raymarine's Axiom Pro RVX with built in 1KW sounder helps me pin point these structures to find the fish.

After finding the area where the fish might be, I switch to chirp with side view. The side view shows me exactly where the fish are in relation to the boat while the chirp sounder (set to manual range) scans the first 100m of water under the boat.
